Contrary to popular belief, a woman cannot get pregnant on any random day of the month. Conception is biologically restricted to a highly specific, fleeting timeframe known as the Fertile Window. This window is dictated by the interaction between two critical biological lifespans: the survival time of an egg (ovum) and the survival time of sperm inside the female reproductive tract.
Once a mature egg is released from the ovary during ovulation, it survives for a maximum of 12 to 24 hours. If it is not fertilized within that tight timeframe, it disintegrates and conception is impossible until the next cycle.
However, healthy sperm are remarkably resilient. In the right cervical environment, they can survive in the fallopian tubes for up to 5 days, waiting for an egg to be released. Therefore, your total fertile window spans roughly 6 days: the 5 days leading up to ovulation, and the day of ovulation itself.
To understand the predictions made by our calculator, you must understand the hormonal orchestra driving the typical 28-to-32 day cycle:
Begins on the first day of your period. The pituitary gland releases Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), prompting the ovaries to grow follicles. Estrogen levels steadily rise, thickening the uterine lining.
Triggered by a massive, sudden surge of Luteinizing Hormone (LH). The dominant follicle ruptures, releasing a mature egg into the fallopian tube. This is peak fertility.
The ruptured follicle turns into the corpus luteum, which pumps out progesterone to stabilize the uterine lining. This phase is highly consistent, almost exactly 14 days long, regardless of total cycle length.
While our calculator provides excellent date-based estimations using the calendar method (the standard Ogino-Knaus formula), clinical experts recommend combining these dates with biological tracking to confirm the exact day:
